I am a former elementary/special education public school teacher. While I will always love to teach, there is nothing I enjoy more than learning about subjects I am most passionate about. There is ALWAYS so much more to learn and while preparing to embark on this endeavor, I started collecting and reading books about feline husbandry, feline behavior, breeding, genetics, and most importantly, MAINE COONS! Why? Because anything worth investing so much of your time and heart in is worth doing to the very best of your ability. I care very much about our cats and the Maine Coon breed and want to contribute something positive to future pet families and the breed as a whole. I wholeheartedly believe that better decisions are made when you acquire more knowledge. Reading is just one way I accomplish this and it is a big part of my commitment to ongoing education as a responsible, ethical cat breeder. I realize that not every pet owner will care to read about feline genetics and that sort of thing. However, books about Maine Coon cats and feline behavior are very interesting and informative for anyone who loves cats and/or owns Maine Coons. Here are some of the books I have collected, enjoyed, and still refer to.
**This is by no means an exhaustive list so if you have a great book you would like to share with me about any of these subjects, please do share! :) Here are some of my favorites:
Kendall, R. (2014). Maine coon cats : the owner’s guide from kitten to old age : buying, caring for, grooming, health, training and understanding your Maine Coon. Cwp Publishing.
Liza Gardner Walsh. (2013). The maine coon cat. Down East Books.
Marilis Hornidge. (1991). That yankee cat : the maine coon. Tilbury House.Vella, C. M., & Robinson, R. (2002). Robinson’s genetics for cat breeders and veterinarians. Butterworth-Heinemann.
